Facebook changes its name to Meta in major rebrand

Facebook has changed its corporate name to Metaas part of a major rebrand. The company said it would better "encompass" what it does, as it broadens its reach beyond social media into areas like virtual reality (VR).The change does not apply to its individual platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp, only the parent company that owns them.

Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg announced the new name as he unveiled plans to build a "metaverse" -an online world where people can game, work and communicate in a virtual environment, often using VR headsets.

He said the existing brand could not "possibly represent everything that we're doing today, let alone in the future", and needed to change.

The company also unveiled a new sign at its headquarters in Menlo Park, California, on Thursday, replacing its thumbs-up "Like" logo with a blue infinity shape.

Mr Zuckerberg saidthe new name reflects that over time, users will not need to use Facebook to use the company's other services.

The word "meta" comes from the Greek word meaning "beyond". To an outsider, a metaverse may look like a version of VR, but some people believe it could be the future of the internet.Instead of being on a computer, people in a metaverse might use a headset to enter a virtual world connecting all sorts of digital environments.

World faces disastrous 2.7C temperature rise on current climate plans, UN warns

The world is squandering the opportunity to “build back better” from the Covid-19 pandemic, andfaces disastrous temperature rises of at least 2.7C if countries fail to strengthen their climate pledges, according to a report from the UN.

Tuesday’s publication warns that countries’ current pledges would reduce carbon by only about 7.5% by 2030,far less than the 45% cut scientists say is needed to limit global temperature rises to 1.5C.

Although more than 100 countries have promised to reach net zero emissions around mid-century, this would not be enough to stave off climate disaster, according to the UN emissions report, which examines the shortfall between countries’ intentions and actions needed on the climate. Many of the net zero pledges were found to be vague, and unless accompanied by stringent cuts in emissions this decade would allow global heating of a potentially catastrophic extent.

Emissions fell by about 5.4% last year during Covid lockdowns, the report found, but only about a fifth of the spending on economic recovery was geared to efforts that would cut carbon. This failure to “build back better” despite promises by governments around the world cast doubt on the world’s willingness to make the economic shift necessary to tackle the climate crisis, the UN said.

In the run-up to Cop26, countries were supposed to submit national plans on emissions cuts – called nationally determined contributions (NDCs) – for the next decade, a requirement under the 2015 Paris climate agreement.

But the Unep report found only half of countries had submitted new NDCs, andseveral other governments– including Russia, Brazil, Australia and Mexico –had presented weak plansthat were no improvement on their 2015 Paris pledges.

Tokyo restaurant’s bright idea: Lantern pods for you to sit in while you eat

The partitions have recently been installed in the restaurant of Hoshinoya Tokyo, a luxury hotel in Tokyo’s Otemachi neighborhood that’s part of the Hoshino Resorts group. They’re not just called lantern partitions because of how they look, either, as the Hoshino group produced them in cooperation with Kojima Shoten, a Kyoto lantern craftsmen’s workshop that’s been in business since the Kansei years (1789-1801) of Japan’s Edo period.

It’s called the lantern partition, and when you sit down at the table, you slide underneath it. While the top section is a traditionally styled chochin (Japanese paper lantern), part-way down it transitions to clear plastic, allowing you and your dining companions to remove your masks while you eat but still have a protective barrier that allows you to see one another, all without taking up any extra space on the table.

Each lantern partition is 102 centimeters tall and 75 centimeters in diameter, with its own light source to keep your face and food illuminated.

The partitions were added to Hoshinoya’s private banquet room, along with a Tokyo Lantern Banquet multi-course meal. Ordinarily, the restaurant is only open to people staying at the hotel, butfor the Lantern Banquet they may invite outside guests to join them in this unique dining experience.

Chinese blockbuster hits Provinces raise old-age pension payment standardyuan

More than half of China's provincial-level regions have increased the payment standard for basic old-age pensions for urban and rural residents, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security said on Wednesday. According to the ministry, a total of 16 provincial-level regions in China have raised the payment standard, with a maximum rise of 100 yuan per month in some regions, covering more than 72 million elderly people.

As of the end of 2020, there were over 542 million people in China participating in the basic old-age insurance plan, most of whom were rural residents.

Myopia rate falls by 0.9%

The prevalence of myopia among Chinese children and teenagers was 52.7% in 2020,a decrease of 0.9 percentage points from 2018, the Ministry of Education said Tuesday. The myopia rate in 2020 was 2.5 percentage points higher than the 2019 level, as schools shifted classes online and students had to study at home due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

According to the ministry, this decline has basically met the annual target of reducing the myopia rate by 0.5 percentage points stipulated in a 2018 plan.

The plan also set forth a series of targets includingreducing the myopia rate among primary, middle and high school students to less than 38%, 60% and 70% by 2030, respectively.
